AI Toolbox #7: Gamma – Can AI Turn Your Ideas Into a Presentation?

Have you ever had to make a presentation and found yourself staring at a blank screen wondering where to start?

What should the first slide say?

How many slides do you need?

Which images should you use?

And, perhaps the most frustrating question of all:

How do I make it look good?

That’s where Gamma comes in.

Gamma is an AI-powered workspace that can turn a simple idea, outline, document or even a web page into a presentation.

And it doesn’t stop at presentations.

Gamma can also create documents, websites, social posts and images. (gamma.app)

So, for this week’s AI Toolbox, we’re asking:

Could Gamma save you from starting with a blank page?

What is Gamma?

Gamma is designed to help you create visual content without having to build everything manually.

You give it an idea or some material to work with.

Gamma then helps turn that information into a structured piece of content.

For example, you could start with:

“Create a 10-slide presentation explaining artificial intelligence to beginners.”

Gamma can produce an initial structure, write the content and arrange it into designed slides.

You can then edit the result yourself.

That last part matters.

The AI gives you a starting point. You still get to decide what stays.

It’s not just presentations

This is where Gamma becomes more interesting.

You can use it to create:

  • 📊 Presentations
  • 📄 Documents
  • 🌐 Websites
  • 📱 Social posts
  • 🖼️ Images

So if you’re thinking of Gamma as simply an AI version of PowerPoint, you’re missing part of the picture.

It’s closer to a visual content workspace.

How does it work?

The basic idea is remarkably simple.

1. Give Gamma something to work with

You can describe what you want, paste in text, or bring in existing material.

You can also import files such as PDFs and PowerPoint presentations. (gamma.app)

2. Let Gamma build a first version

Gamma creates the structure, text, imagery and layout.

According to Gamma, its process is essentially:

Prompt → outline → slides. (Gamma)

That means you’re not staring at an empty slide wondering whether the title should be at the top or somewhere in the middle.

3. Make it yours

This is the part I wouldn’t skip.

AI-generated content is a first draft, not a finished presentation.

You can change the wording, rearrange slides, replace images and adjust the design.

You know your audience better than Gamma does.

What could you use Gamma for?

There are plenty of possibilities.

💼 Work presentations

Need to explain an idea to colleagues?

Gamma can give you a starting point rather than making you build every slide from scratch.

🎓 Education

Students and teachers could use it to turn a subject into a visual presentation.

For example:

“Create an eight-slide presentation explaining climate change to secondary-school students.”

You could then check the information, make changes and add your own material.

📚 Books and writing

Here’s one that caught my attention.

An author could take the main ideas from a book and turn them into a presentation.

For example:

“Create a presentation introducing my novel, its main themes and the journey of the main character.”

That could potentially become useful promotional material for an author.

📱 Social media

Gamma can also create social content.

That means an idea that begins as a presentation doesn’t necessarily have to stay as one.

You can adapt information into another format rather than starting again from scratch.

🌐 Simple websites

Gamma can create web pages as well.

This could be useful if you need a simple information page without wanting to build a website from the ground up.

What about existing documents?

This is one of Gamma’s useful features.

You don’t necessarily have to start with a blank prompt.

You can import a PDF or PowerPoint presentation and work from there. Gamma’s current free plan also supports exporting creations as PDF, PPTX, PNG and Google Slides. (gamma.app)

That means you can move between Gamma and tools you’re probably already familiar with.

Can you use Gamma for free?

Yes.

Gamma currently has a Free plan.

It includes AI creations and allows users to create up to 10 slides per prompt. It also supports simple presentations, documents, websites, social posts and images. (gamma.app)

The free plan comes with 400 credits when you sign up, but those credits don’t automatically refresh. Gamma says free users can earn additional credits through referrals. (Gamma Help Centre)

Paid plans provide more AI usage, additional features and options such as removing Gamma branding.

So, as usual with our Toolbox:

Try the free version before paying for anything.

What are the advantages?

👍 It gets you started quickly

The blank page is often the hardest part.

Gamma gives you something to work with.

👍 It handles the design

You don’t have to manually arrange every element on every slide.

👍 It can work from existing material

You can import PDFs and PowerPoint files rather than starting again. (gamma.app)

👍 It can create different types of content

Presentations aren’t the only option.

Documents, websites, social posts and images are also part of the platform.

👍 You can export your work

You aren’t locked into viewing everything inside Gamma.

The free plan supports exports including PDF, PowerPoint, PNG and Google Slides. (gamma.app)

And the disadvantages?

👎 The first draft isn’t necessarily the final draft

AI can produce something that looks polished while still containing wording or information you wouldn’t want to publish.

Read through it.

Check the facts.

Make it yours.

👎 The free credits are limited

The free plan is useful for trying Gamma, but the initial credits don’t continually refill. (Gamma Help Centre)

👎 You may still need to edit the design

AI can get you a long way, but sometimes you’ll want to change an image, shorten a paragraph or rearrange a slide.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The point is to reduce the work—not eliminate your judgement.

👎 There’s another tool to learn

We’ve said this before in the AI Toolbox.

Having access to dozens of AI tools doesn’t mean you need to use all of them.

Find the ones that genuinely help you.

My Verdict

Gamma is one of those AI tools where the usefulness becomes obvious when you have an actual job for it.

If someone tells you:

“Make me a presentation.”

your first thought might be:

“Oh no.” 😂

With Gamma, you can start with:

“Here’s what I need to explain. Help me turn it into a presentation.”

That’s a significant difference.

The other thing I like is that Gamma doesn’t force you to be a designer.

You can concentrate on what you want to say, while Gamma helps with the structure and presentation.

But don’t hand over the whole job and walk away.

The best result will usually come from AI doing the heavy lifting and you doing the finishing work.

Final Thoughts

We’ve now looked at seven different tools in the Striv AI Toolbox.

ChatGPT.

Perplexity AI.

Canva AI.

Claude.

Gemini.

Gemini Notebook.

And now Gamma.

Notice something?

We’re not looking for one magical AI tool that does everything.

We’re looking at tools that solve different problems.

And Gamma has a fairly clear job:

Take an idea and help turn it into something visual.

If you’ve ever needed to create a presentation, brochure, webpage or social post and didn’t know where to begin, Gamma might be worth trying.

Start with something small.

Give it one idea.

See what it produces.

Then decide whether it deserves a permanent place in your toolbox.

Have you tried Gamma?

If you have, what did you create with it?

If you haven’t, what would you ask Gamma to make for you?
