AI Toolbox #11: Mistral Vibe — The AI You May Not Have Heard Of

If someone asked you to name three AI tools, chances are ChatGPT, Gemini or perhaps Copilot would come to mind.

But there are plenty of others.

Some are well known. Others are quietly developing into serious competitors without getting nearly as much attention.

One of those is Mistral Vibe, from French AI company Mistral AI.

You may have come across its previous name, Le Chat.

In August 2026, Mistral renamed Le Chat as Vibe and expanded it into a broader AI assistant for work, research and coding. (Mistral Help Center)

So what is Mistral Vibe, and is it worth knowing about?

What is Mistral Vibe?

At its simplest, Vibe is an AI assistant.

You can chat with it, ask questions, search the web, upload documents and images, and ask it to help you create things.

Sound familiar?

It should.

By now, most of the major AI assistants can do many of the same things.

The interesting question isn’t whether Vibe can do these things.

It’s how well it does them and what makes it different.

It’s not just a chatbot

Mistral describes Vibe as an AI assistant that can help with everything from everyday questions to more complicated tasks.

It can search the web, analyse documents and spreadsheets, generate images, work with voice and help create documents and other content. (Mistral)

It can also carry out more complicated, multi-step tasks.

For example, instead of simply asking:

“What is happening with this subject?”

you could ask it to research the subject, look at several sources and produce a structured report.

That’s where AI assistants are beginning to move beyond simple question-and-answer chat.

Vibe can search the web

Like several of the tools we’ve already looked at, Vibe can search the internet for current information.

You can ask it to find recent information and provide sources rather than relying entirely on what the AI already knows. (Mistral AI Documentation)

You can also give it a specific webpage and ask it to read and analyse that page.

That’s useful if you’ve found an article or website and don’t want to read through every word yourself.

What about documents?

This is one of the areas where Vibe could be useful to ordinary users.

You can upload documents, PDFs, spreadsheets and images and ask the AI questions about them.

For example:

“Can you summarise this document in simple English?”

Or:

“Find the important figures in this spreadsheet.”

Or:

“What does this letter actually mean?”

Vibe’s current file tools support documents, images and spreadsheets, with the AI using the uploaded material as context for the conversation. (Mistral AI Documentation)

That can be a lot more useful than simply asking an AI a general question.

There’s a Canvas too

Vibe also has a feature called Canvas.

Think of it as a workspace where the AI can create and refine things rather than simply displaying another answer in the chat.

It can be used for documents, presentations, code, mockups and other creations. (Mistral)

This is another example of where AI is heading.

Instead of:

Ask → Answer → Done

we’re increasingly seeing:

Ask → Create → Edit → Improve → Finish

That’s a significant change in how we can use AI.

And yes, it can create images

Vibe also includes AI image generation and editing.

So you could describe the image you want and have the AI create it.

Again, this isn’t unique.

We’ve already seen image generation in several of the AI tools covered in the Toolbox.

But it shows how these platforms are becoming increasingly comprehensive.

What about Deep Research?

Vibe can also carry out deeper research tasks.

Instead of giving you a quick answer, its research tools can search multiple sources, analyse the information and produce a structured report with citations. (Mistral AI Documentation)

That’s potentially useful for students, writers, researchers or anyone who needs to understand a subject rather than simply get a one-line answer.

And importantly, you can check the sources yourself.

That’s something I always recommend with AI-generated research.

There’s a free version

Here’s the bit many people will want to know.

Yes, you can start for free.

Mistral’s current Free plan provides access to Vibe for everyday tasks, including chat, web searches, image generation, document uploads and some coding capabilities, although usage is limited. (Mistral)

There are paid plans if you need higher limits and more advanced capabilities.

But, as we’ve said throughout this series:

Try the free version before paying.

There’s no point collecting AI subscriptions simply because they exist.

So why haven’t you heard more about it?

That’s a good question.

Mistral isn’t as familiar to the general public as companies such as Google, Microsoft or OpenAI.

But that doesn’t mean it’s insignificant.

Mistral AI is a European AI company and has been developing its own family of AI models and tools.

And Vibe shows that it isn’t simply trying to build another basic chatbot.

It’s trying to build an AI assistant that can research, create, analyse information and carry out more complicated tasks.

What could you actually use it for?

Let’s forget the technical language for a moment.

What could an ordinary person actually do with Vibe?

You could use it to:

  • Research a subject
  • Search for current information
  • Summarise a long document
  • Analyse a spreadsheet
  • Rewrite something you’ve written
  • Create documents
  • Generate images
  • Ask questions about a PDF
  • Work on ideas for a project
  • Carry out deeper research
  • Experiment with creating things using AI

And if you’re interested in coding, it goes considerably further.

But you don’t need to be a programmer to find value in it.

Is Mistral Vibe better than ChatGPT?

I’m not going to say yes.

And I’m not going to say no.

That’s partly because “better” depends on what you’re trying to do.

If you’re writing an email, several AI tools can probably do a perfectly good job.

If you’re researching a subject, several can search the web.

If you’re analysing a document, several can do that too.

The differences become more interesting when you start using the tools regularly.

One might give you an answer you prefer.

Another might be faster.

Another might have a feature you particularly like.

That’s something we’ll eventually be able to compare properly because by the end of this series we’ll have looked at quite a few of them.

Striv Verdict

Worth trying: YES

Worth paying for immediately: NO

Mistral Vibe is certainly worth putting on your list of AI tools to try.

It’s capable of far more than simply answering questions, and the free version gives you an opportunity to see what it can do without immediately reaching for your bank card. (Mistral)

You may find that it becomes one of your regular AI tools.

Or you may try it and decide that the tools you already use do everything you need.

Either result is useful.

Final thoughts

One thing is becoming increasingly obvious as we work our way through the AI Toolbox.

There isn’t just one AI anymore.

There are dozens of serious tools, and they’re increasingly capable of doing many of the same things.

Mistral Vibe is one of the lesser-known names, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored.

If you’re curious about AI, give it a try.

You might be surprised by what you find.

And don’t worry if you don’t know what all the technical terms mean.

Just start with a simple question.

That’s what these tools are there for.
