
When people first start using AI, they often focus on one thing:
Getting answers.
And honestly, that’s understandable.
AI can explain complex topics, summarise information, generate ideas, and answer questions within seconds. It feels incredibly useful from the very first interaction.
But the more I use AI, the more I think an important skill is often overlooked.
Critical thinking.
Because learning how to use AI isn’t just about knowing what to ask.
It’s also about knowing when to question the answer.
One of the realities of modern AI is that it can occasionally get things wrong.
In the AI world, this is sometimes called a “hallucination.”
Despite the unusual name, it simply means the AI produces information that sounds convincing but isn’t entirely accurate.
And that’s where things become interesting.
The answer may be well written.
It may sound confident.
It may even appear logical.
But confidence and accuracy are not always the same thing.
I’ve noticed this myself while researching topics.
Sometimes an AI response provides a useful starting point. Other times, a few details need checking before they can be trusted.
That’s not necessarily a flaw unique to AI.
People make mistakes too.
The difference is that many of us instinctively question human opinions.
We don’t always question a polished AI response in the same way.
There’s another challenge as well.
AI systems learn from vast amounts of data created by humans.
And human data isn’t perfect.
It contains assumptions, opinions, gaps, and biases.
As a result, AI can sometimes reflect those limitations.
That’s why fact-checking remains important.
The goal isn’t to distrust AI.
It’s to use it wisely.
For example, if you’re researching an important topic, making a financial decision, or trying to understand a complex issue, it often makes sense to compare AI-generated information with reliable sources.
In many ways, the most valuable AI skill may not be prompt writing.
It may be critical thinking.
The ability to ask:
- Is this accurate?
- Where did this information come from?
- Can I verify it elsewhere?
- Does this make sense?
As AI becomes more common in everyday life, those questions may become increasingly important.
Because the people who benefit most from AI probably won’t be those who accept every answer.
They’ll be the ones who know when to question it.
And perhaps that’s one of the most important lessons AI can teach us.
Not how to stop thinking.
But how to think more carefully.
